Paperback Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.
Book Description
A trained philosopher and intellectual historian as well as a writer of genius, C. S. Lewis was one of the most lucid, profound, and eloquent critics of the reductive scientific materialism that has helped make the twentieth century so destructive and confused. The Restitution of Man examines the conflict between scientific materialism and the Christian philosophical tradition as it has taken place since the seventeenth century. It examines Lewis's role as inheritor of and spokesman of this tradition and as an articulate opponent of reductive naturalism and "the abolition of man" that materialistic ideologies always entail. In probing the breadth of Lewis's writings, Michael Aeschliman shows why Lewis's apologetic for the Christian view of man is a precious resource for the transmission of human sanity, ethics, and wisdom in an age that has frequently ignored or obliterated all three. This revised edition of Aeschliman's acclaimed study includes a new foreword by George Gilder and a new afterword by the author. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Dr. Barclay's fresh translation and clear exposition make Paul's very complicated letter to the church in Rome easier than ever to understand. Both in mood and in method Romans is entirely different from Paul's other writings. Here he is settling down in a systematic fashion the essence of his faith--bequeathing in a "theological least will and testament" the ideas which have most shaped Christian belief: the questions of righteousness, of the Jews as the Chosen People, and of how man is to live... read more

Here, as in the other titles in this series, is Dr. Barclay's own translation of the day's study together with his enlightening commentary. Written by Paul in prison at Rome, the letter to the Philippians is theologically concerned with the real identification of Jesus both with God and with humanity. The letter to the Colossians combats heretical Gnostic teachings, declaring that God did create the world and that his Son, Jesus Christ, was his instrument in creation. These four letters, too often neglected, possess an interest that is quite unique to church people today. I and II Timothy and Titus, known as the Pastoral Epistles, deal with extremely practical matters of church management and personal conduct. The little letter to Philemon is the only private letter of Paul that we possess. It tells the romantic story of the runaway slave Onesimus, who, as Dr. Barclay shows, may have become, some fifty years later, the great bishop of Ephesus.

From the Publisher
This critically acclaimed history covers the events and doctrines that have shaped Catholic thought and action over the past two millennia. A singularly useful reference book, updated and expanded for the student of the 1990's. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
Book Description
, first published by Image Books in 1979, has been one of the bestselling religious histories of the past two decades. Long a mainstay for scholars, students, and others looking for a definitive, accessible history of Catholicism, it has now been meticulously expanded and updated for the new millennium. With a clarity and conciseness that will appeal to the general reader, Thomas Bokenkotter divides his study into five parts that correspond to the major historical and epochal developments in Catholicism. His authoritative, thorough approach takes readers from the Church's triumph over paganism, through "the sound and fury of renewal," to a new section devoted to such topics as dissent, current developments in the ecumenical movement, and liberation theology. Informative illustrations throughout the book, new to this edition, enrich the reader's experience, and the addition of a wide-ranging bibliography increases its value as a sourcebook.
A reviewer called the previous edition of A Concise History of the Catholic Church "a tract for the times, an attempt to help bewildered Roman Catholics and others get some sense of the origins of all the change that has streamed through the windows by Vatican II." This new edition reaffirms its importance in the library of ecumenical studies and confirms its place among the classics. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Historian Daniel J. Boorstin brings his customary depth and range to this compelling book on Western art, taking on everything from European megaliths (Stonehenge, for example) to Benjamin Franklin's autobiography ("the first American addition to world literature"). Boorstin does not aim at being comprehensive--he much prefers to linger over certain "heroes of the imagination" as he surveys human accomplishment in the fields of architecture, music, painting, sculpting, and writing--yet The Creators certainly feels comprehensive, as Boorstin carefully places everything he describes within a grand tradition of aesthetic achievement.
Boorstin knows that good history demands good writing, and his prose makes this big book easy to absorb. "This is a story," he writes, "of how creators in all the arts have enlarged, embellished, fantasized, and filigreed our experience"--an apt description of the role art plays in our life and an equally apt description of the way Boorstin interprets it for readers. (The Creators also is the second volume of a trilogy that starts with The Discoverers and concludes with The Seekers, although none of these books requires any knowledge of the others.) --John J. Miller --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
Book Description
By piecing the lives of selected individuals into a grand mosaic, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Daniel J. Boorstin explores the development of artistic innovation over 3,000 years. I and Thou, Martin Buber's classic philosophical work, is among the 20th century's foundational documents of religious ethics. "The close association of the relation to God with the relation to one's fellow-men ... is my most essential concern," Buber explains in the Afterword. Before discussing that relationship, in the book's final chapter, Buber explains at length the range and ramifications of the ways people treat one another, and the ways they bear themselves in the natural world. "One should beware altogether of understanding the conversation with God ... as something that occurs merely apart from or above the everyday," Buber explains. "God's address to man penetrates the events in all our lives and all the events in the world around us, everything biographical and everything historical, and turns it into instruction, into demands for you and me." Throughout I and Thou, Buber argues for an ethic that does not use other people (or books, or trees, or God), and does not consider them objects of one's own personal experience. Instead, Buber writes, we must learn to consider everything around us as "You" speaking to "me," and requiring a response. Buber's dense arguments can be rough going at times, but Walter Kaufmann's definitive 1970 translation contains hundreds of helpful footnotes providing Buber's own explanations of the book's most difficult passages. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Martin Buber's I and Thou has long been acclaimed as a classic. Many prominent writers have acknowledged its influence on their work; students of intellectual history consider it a landmark; and the generation born since World War II considers Buber as one of its prophets.
The need for a new English translation has been felt for many years. The old version was marred by many inaccuracies and misunderstandings, and its recurrent use of the archaic "thou" was seriously misleading. Now Professor... read more

The Vietnam War continues to play itself out in fiction, autobiography, and history books, but no American author has captured the experiences of the Vietnamese themselves--and caught their voices--more tellingly than Robert Olen Butler, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for A Good Scent From a Strange Mountain. The 15 stories collected here, all written in the first person, blend Vietnamese folklore, the terrible, lingering memories of war, American pop culture and family drama. Butler's literary ventriloquism, as he mines the experiences of a people with a great literary tradition of their own, is uncanny; but his talents as a writer of universal truths is what makes this a collection for the ages.
From Publishers Weekly
Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, Butler's 15 stories, set in the Vietnamese enclaves of suburban New Orleans, capture the voices of people who have lost their homeland and are trying to adapt to an alien culture. Named by PW as one of the best books of 1992.

She wants to reaffirm the traditional unity of sex, love and parenthood, not as an absolute norm, but a guiding framework. The many new features of this edition include "Que Sera, Sera: Who Will Be the Next Pope?" and "Ansubstantiation-tray: Can't Anybody Here Speak Latin?" Growing Up Catholic is bubbly but never blasphemous--just irreverent enough to be interesting, but not so irreverent as to be an inappropriate confirmation gift. --Paul Power

From Library Journal
Chinnici begins with brief stories of four women who found traditional Christian imagery and language alienating. She addresses primarily the reader whose consciousness of exclusion is beginning to be raised, and who needs to distinguish church from religion and find a religious perspective which affirms the full humanity and equal dignity of women. New and personal images which breathe new life into the faith are essential for this affirmation. While written from a Roman Catholic perspective, the book will be useful to those of other traditions as well. Recommended especially for public libraries.

From Library Journal
A dozen Christian theologians tackle the question of human cloning and offer diverse views of whether cloning is "playing God" and whether it is something to be welcomed as a scientific advance or feared as a manipulation of creation. While all 12 agree this question needs to be discussed before human cloning becomes a reality, they offer a wide range of views. The contributors represent various Christian denominations. Most are present or former seminary professors; two are directors of church "think-tanks" (representing the Church of Scotland and Roman Catholicism). Two of the 12 are women: one says no to cloning; one sees it as a way to undercut male hegemony and solve the problem of same-sex couples who want a child who possesses the genes of at least one of them. Overall, the collection offers provocative views of an emerging moral issue. Highly recommended.?Augustine J. Curley, Newark Abbey, N.J.

From Library Journal
Cornwell, a former seminarian turned agnostic, took a year's leave from his job as a journalist in order to investigate contemporary paranormal religious occurrence, mostly within a Catholic context. He explores the authenticity of phenomena reported in Yugoslavia, Spain, Canada, Italy, and even the Bronx, New York. An Irish nun with a healing ministry appears several times in the book, as do several Jesuit priests, which helps convey the more-or-less official church views. Cornwell writes with color and strong personal bias and often employs severe characterization. However, healthy skepticism plays an important role in seeking evidence to justify faith. Does divinity hide within weeping statues, stigmatics, or shrouds? Cornwell suggests the answers lie within the seeking heart, and in discarding false idols through a skeptical approach. In his excellent A Thief in the Night (1989), Cornwell looked into rumors that Pope John Paul I had been murdered. Here, the former seminarian conducts a yet more subtle and meaningful investigation--of the ``incidence and significance...of paranormal religious phenomena'': flying monks, weeping statues, divine apparitions, and the like. A professed agnostic, Cornwell a few years ago found his nonbelief undermined when he experienced a prophetic ``religious dream.'' His curiosity aroused, he set... read more

Tom Clancy goes to the White House in this thriller of political terror and global disaster. The American political situation takes a disturbing turn as the President, Congress, and Supreme Court are obliterated when a Japanese terrorist lands a 747 on the Capitol. Meanwhile the Iranians are unleashing an Ebola virus threat on the country. Jack Ryan, CIA agent, is cast in the middle of this maelstrom. Because of a recent sex scandal, Ryan was appointed vice president, a slot he doesn't hold for long when he lands in the Chief Executive's chair. He goes after the Iranians and then tries to piece together the country and his life the only way he knows how--with a fury that we've grown accustomed to in Clancy's intricate, detailed, and accurate stories of warfare and intrigue. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Humorist, essayist, and occasional "deadline poet," Trillin reads a selection of his work from across the years. The author is justly famous for wry and dry wit, and all of these "pieces" fall into the laugh-out-loud category. Ranging from the famous "Corrections" article (ostensibly from the pages of the New York Times) to some doggerel, to the wonders of suburbanites with car alarms visiting Greenwich Village, these selections are truly delightful. Unfortunately, the producer does not list the recording's contents anywhere on the package. Still, this outstanding collection should be in every library; highly recommended.

Folklore, fairy tales and dream symbols are called on to help restore women's neglected intuitive and instinctive abilities in this earthy first book by a Jungian analyst. According to Estes, wolves and women share a psychic bond in their fierceness, grace and devotion to mate and community. This comparison defines the archetype of the Wild Woman, a female in touch with her primitive side and able to rely on gut feelings to make choices. The tales here, from various cultures, are not necessarily about wolves; instead, they illuminate fresh perspectives on relationships, self-image, even addiction. An African tale of twins who baffle a man represents the dual nature of woman; from the Middle East, a story about a threadbare but secretly magic carpet shows society's failure to look beyond appearances. Three brief, ribald stories advocate a playful, open sexuality; other examples suggest ways to deal with anger and jealousy. At times, Estes's commentary--in which she urges readers to draw upon and enjoy their Wild Woman aspects--is hyperbolic, but overall her widely researched study offers usable advice for modern women.

A feminist counterpart to Iron John--or, how ``a healthy woman is much like a wolf.'' Est‚s, a Jungian analyst, believes that a woman's wholeness depends on her returning to the sources of her repressed instinctual nature. To illustrate the ways of the ``wild woman,'' the author draws on myths, legends, and fairy tales from a vast and eclectic range of traditions. This collection of stories may well be the most valuable element of the book, which otherwise reads like unedited transcripts of... read more --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
Book Description
UPDATED, WITH NEW MATERIAL BY THE AUTHOR"WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES isn't just another book. It is a gift of profound insight, wisdom, and love. An oracle from one who knows."--Alice WalkerWithin every woman there lives a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. She is the Wild Woman, who represents the instinctual nature of women. But she is an endangered species. In WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES, Dr. Estés unfolds rich intercultural myths, fairy tales, and stories, many from her own family, in order to help women reconnect with the fierce, healthy, visionary attributes of this instinctual nature. Through the stories and commentaries in this remarkable book, we retrieve, examine, love, and understand the Wild Woman and hold her against our deep psyches as one who is both magic and medicine. Dr. Estés has created a new lexicon for describing the female psyche. Fertile and life-giving, it is a psychology of women in the truest sense, a knowing of the soul."This volume reminds us that we are nature for all our sophistication, that we are still wild, and the recovery of that vitality will itself set us right in the world."--Thomas Moore Author of Care of the Soul"I am grateful to WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES and to Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés. The work shows the reader how glorious it is to be daring, to be caring, and to be women. Everyone who can read should read this book."--Maya Angelou"An inspiring book, the 'vitamins for the soul' [for] women who are cut off from their intuitive nature."--San Francisco Chronicle"Stands out from the pack . . . A joy and sparkle in [the] prose . . . This book will become a bible for women interested in doing deep work. . . . It is a road map of all the pitfalls, those familiar and those horrifically unexpected, that a woman encounters on the way back to her instinctual self. Michael Toms presents a swift and unadorned reading of Matthew Fox's consciousness-changing text. The treatise traces the effect of the advancement of Fall/Redemption theology and the denial of Creation-centered theology on contemporary society. Fox was defrocked by the Roman Catholic Church for the ideologies he supports in this text. Toms, the writer, editor and broadcast producer of public radio's New Age "Dimensions," is at home with the subject. His sincere rendering of the text creates an appropriate earnestness as background. A contemporary interview with Matthew Fox conducted by Toms rewards the listener at the end. C.F.G. In 1994, the Catechism of the Catholic Church became a national bestseller. In the wake of this publishing phenomenon, many books explored what Catholics believe, but few offered insights into how Catholics practice their faith. Ghezzi, v-p and editorial director of Servant Books, offers what he calls a "primer on putting the Catholic faith into practice." The first section of the book explores "Being Catholic" and provides brief reflections on conversion, discipleship and faith. He also offers a brief overview of the history of the Catholic church. The second section, "Receiving Daily Graces," describes in some detail the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist as well as the structure of the Mass. Ghezzi's third section focuses on "Opening to God" and meditates on the spirituality of Mary and the saints, the work of the Holy Spirit and the importance of daily Bible reading and prayer. The final two sections explore ethical living in daily life and politics, as well as participation in Christian community and family life. Each chapter contains suggestions for further reading, ideas for individual or group study and questions for reflection and discussion. Ghezzi's humorous anecdotes and pastoral prose offer a useful introduction to Catholic practice.

The Beloved Classic,
Now a Major Motion Picture
When Joshua moves to a small cabin on the edge of town, the local people are mystified by his presence. A quiet and simple man, Joshua appears to seek nothing for himself. He supports himself by working as a carpenter. He charges very little for his services, yet his craftsmanship is exquisite. The statue of Moses that he carves for the local synagogue prompts amazement as well as consternation.

From Library Journal
Glinert (Hebrew and Jewish studies, Univ. of London) has brought together a collection of more than 600 entries on "the best known and most lovable Hebrew words and sayings." Although the style is light-hearted, the author knows his subject. The arrangement is alphabetical according to an excellent transliteration. Entries range from the familiar Bar Mitzvah and chutzpah to rachmanut ("compassion") and tsarr gidul banim ("the stress of raising children"). Definitions are drawn from literature, folklore, and history and from everyday and esoteric sources. Glinert delights in sharing punchy anecdotes and humorous stories. Nor does he slight etymology. An introductory essay surveys the fate of Hebrew from its ancient beginnings to the present, a fate which parallels that of the Jewish people. A significant virtue of this book is the author's clear explanation of the difference between Hebrew and Yiddish. He relates the history and development of each language and notes their intersecting points. This title will be welcomed on its own merits for its easy readability and informative entries. One of the few on the subject available to readers of English, it makes no pretense of being comprehensive. Recommended for libraries without William Chomsky's classic Hebrew: The Eternal Language (Jewish Pubn. Society, 1975).

Synopsis
A biography of Pope John XXIII, who transformed the Roman Catholic Church with the Second Vatican Council. He mediated in the Cuban missile crisis and promoted dialogue between Kennedy and Khrushchev. With his encyclical, "Pacem in Terris", he made hope seem possible again.
Synopsis
Born into a simple family on the northern edge of Italy, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli spent much of his working life in unfashionable diplomatic postings in Sofia and Istanbul until his surprise appointment as Papal Representative in Paris in the difficult years immediately after World War II. In 1953, he became Patriarch of Venice in what was assumed to be the last appointment of a man whom many considered worthy but naive. From Publishers Weekly
In this scrupulous, densely detailed biography, veteran Vatican reporter Hebblethwaite ( John XXIII ) convincingly portrays Paul VI, pontiff from 1963 to 1978, as thoughtfully and judiciously engaged with the political, social and religious issues of the day. Though Hebblethwaite explores the background of Giovanni Battista Montini, born in 1897 in Brescia, Italy, the book is mainly an institutional history of the church and Montini's role in it, based on accounts from sources from several countries. As chaplain of a student movement, Montini opposed Fascism; he was a close adviser to Pope Pius XII during WW II and after; as Archbishop of Milan, he rebuilt the diocese and supported the ecclesiological changes of Pope John XXIII's Vatican II. As pope, Paul VI traveled the world, becoming the first pope to visit the U.S. and Africa; he committed the Church to working with the United Nations and was the first pope to take part in an ecumenical service. Paul VI, the author argues, had a more nuanced view of ethics than was suggested by the "Pope Bans Pill" headlines that summarized his 1968 encyclical letter on birth control, Humanae Vitae. Observing that many people, including Pope John Paul II, now criticize Paul VI, the author ably--though at too great length--defends his pontificate. Photos not seen by PW.

A veteran Vatican reporter draws the reader through the sweeping events of the 20th century in this major biography of Giovanni Battista Montini, who followed John XXIII as Pope Paul VI (1963-78). The Vatican on the international scene is as much the subject as is Montini, who, trained in canon law and diplomacy, quietly initiated and implemented much... read more

Book Description
The first-century Jewish woman Miriam of Nazareth, mother of Jesus, proclaimed in faith to be Theotokos, the God-bearer, is the most celebrated female religious figure in the Christian tradition. So varied and manifold are the traditions about Mary, both popular and scholarly, that some would speak of "Mary" as a collective noun or refer, in George Tavard's memorable title, to The Thousand Faces of the Virgin Mary.
In her long-awaited book on Mary, which forms a diptych with Friends of God and Prophets, Elizabeth Johnson offers an interpretation of Mary that is theologically sound, spiritually empowering, ethically challenging, socially liberating, and ecumenically fruitful. In particular, she construes the image of Mary so as to be a source of blessing rather than blight for women's lives in both religious and political terms.

Book Description
Since its first publication in 1941, A Testament of Devotion, by the renowned Quaker teacher Thomas Kelly, has been universally embraced as a truly enduring spiritual classic. Plainspoken and deeply inspirational, it gathers together five compelling essays that urge us to center our lives on God's presence, to find quiet and stillness within modern life, and to discover the deeply satisfying and lasting peace of the inner spiritual journey. As relevant today as it was a half-century ago, A Testament of Devotion is the ideal companion to that highest of all human arts-the lifelong conversation between God and his creatures.I have in mind something deeper than the simplification of our external programs, our absurdly crowded calendars of appointments through which so many pantingly and frantically gasp. These do become simplified in holy obedience, and the poise and peace we have been missing can really be found. But there is a deeper, an internal simplification of the whole of one's personality, stilled, tranquil, in childlike trust listening ever to Eternity's whisper, walking with a smile into the dark." --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Book Description
We are all strangers in a strange land, longing for home, but not quite knowing what or where home is. We glimpse it sometimes in our dreams, or as we turn a corner, and suddenly there is a strange, sweet familiarity that vanishes almost as soon as it comes... -Madeleine L'Engle, from The Rock That Is Higher
Story captures our hearts and feeds our imaginations. It reminds us who we are and where we came from. Story gives meaning and direction to our lives as we learn to see it as an affirmation of God's love and truth-an acknowledgment of our longing for a rock in the midst of life's wilderness.
Drawing upon her own experiences, well-known tales in literature, and selected narratives from Scripture, Madeleine L'Engle gently leads the way into the glorious world of story in The Rock That Is Higher. Here she acknowledges universal human longings and considers how literature, Scripture, personal stories, and life experiences all point us toward our true home.

Madeleine L'Engle is the author of more than forty-five books for all ages, among them the beloved A Wrinkle in Time, awarded the Newbery Medal; A Ring of Endless Light, a Newbery Honor Book; A Swiftly Tilting Planet, winner of the American Book Award; and the Austin family series of which Troubling a Star is the fifth book. This collection contains fourteen of Lewis's theological papers on subjects such as Christianity and literaure, Christianity and culture, ethics, futility, church music, modern theology and biblical criticism, the Psalms, and petitionary prayer. Common to all of these varied essays are Lewis's uniquely effective style and his tireless concern to relate basic Christianity to all of life.

Paperback Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.
From Library Journal
In 1933, not long after he became a Christian, Lewis published this third work and his first novel, a portrayal of this spiritual journey. Begun as a poem, Pilgrim's Regress thankfully ended up as an allegory that obviously takes its cue from John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Every bit as effective as its predecessor, Lewis's book describes the quest of John to reach the enchanted island and describes and satirizes many of the popular philosophies of the author's time, many of which also have more than a little influence in our day. Eloquent, erudite, and often witty, this tale is superbly narrated by Robert Whitfield. No stranger to the writings of Lewis, Whitfield has a well-modulated voice that easily portrays the numerous characters and gives the narrative sections a steady and consistent tempo. There are a number of Latin epigraphs, which are not translated. Public, religious/theological, and academic libraries should at least consider this audio. Michael T. Ingram
The first book written by C.S. Lewis after his conversion, The Pilgrim's Regress is the record of Lewis's own search for meaning and spiritual satisfaction, a search that eventually led him to Christianity. This brilliant, Bunyanesque allegory tells a fascinating story and constitutes an effective Christian apologia. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From Library Journal
Despite his avowed dislike of reading fugitive journalism, Lewis contributed 19 pieces to newspapers and magazines between 1940 and 1962. His topics ranged from the oddly obtuse "On Living in an Atomic Age" (1948) to the prescient "On Sex in Literature" (1962). In this Sunday Telegraph piece he advocates an end to all "moral censorship" of literature even if "realms of filth" should result. Lewis's ability to drive swiftly to the heart of such topics as prudery, pleasure, and equality is displayed in these articles. While they add little of substance to his canon, they merit notice as masterly examples of Lewis's talent for establishing instant rapport with his readers and using it to lead them in directions they might otherwise have been reluctant to go. I found a 1955 printing of this book in an old waterfront cabin and was struck by the care with which the previous owner had read it. Eve (the name inscribed inside the front cover and then again above the heading for chapter 3) made pencil marks on nearly every paragraph of the book, underlining a phrase, highlighting many passages with strong vertical marks, scratching out some words that she seems to have found superfluous and even x-ing out whole sections that apparently missed their mark with her altogether. Two rusting paper clips isolate several pages, absent any marking at all. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's lyrical words are still relevant and presage so many of the themes of today's most popular books: simplicity, peaceful solitude, caring for the soul, a woman finding her place in society and life. I heard that the woman who had lived in the cabin had actually passed away some time before. Thank you, Eve, for your gift... from the sea. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

"There's hardly a better tool for communicating the fullness of the Catholic Faith than this collection of personal stories."
Ralph Martin, author, Called to Holiness
"An excellent gift for friends and relatives who have lost their way."
Book Description
This collection of testimonies by people who've found new life in the Catholic Church is one of the most potent weapons for the Faith ever crafted! These authors don't just tell their stories - they also give you an insider's view of the fatal weaknesses in the creeds and belief systems that beckon unwary Catholics every day: Fundamentalism, New Age paganism, Mormonism, materialistic hedonism, and many others.
You'll discover why these converts forsook beliefs cherished by their families and friends in order to enter the Catholic Church. Their reasons are so compelling that Catholics can use them to draw their own non-Catholic friends and relatives to the Faith.
These converts will also convince wavering Catholics to stay Catholic, and they'll bolster the faith of Catholics when anti-Catholic arguments start to make them doubt. Readers will come away with new gratitude to God for the Catholic Faith, and with a strong new tool they can use to stand proudly for that Faith.

Most of us believe in God's grace -- in theory. But somehow we can't seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet. Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we've done. We come to Him as ragamuffins -- dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His "furious love." Brennan Manning's now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it -- simple honesty -- has changed thousands of lives. It will change yours, too.

The "Couples' Devotional Bible" brings together Bible verses (using the New International Version) with devotional passages from 143 evangelicals, ranging from Dale Evans (wife of TV cowboy Roy Rogers) to Frank Peretti (author of "This Present Darkness" and other best-selling novels of spiritual warfare). Couples who follow the book's plan can read the Bible text and a useful devotion for each day of the week, with questions and activities for weekends and a subject index on topics from adultery to finances to sex to work. A companion book to the video series "Incredible Creatures That Defy Evolution", Dr. Jobe Martin chronicles his personal journey from traditional scientist to creationist. The book takes a look at animals that break all of the evolutionary "rules." It examines the many problems with evolutionary theory and shows why the Bible is an excellent book of science. Easy to read, this 200 page book is a must for Christian students, Sunday School classes and anyone who is interested in solving the conflict between evolution and the Bible.
The goal of The Evolution of a Creationist is to provide the reader with easily accessible information on the creation versus evolution controversy. The book is a condensation and simplification of more than 20 years of studies that moved Dr. Jobe Martin from unquestioning belief in Darwinian evolution to undoubting trust in the six-day creation by God, as presented in the Biblical account.

The subject of this long and intriguing novel is the Vatican's elaborate bureaucracy, in particular its powerful financial network, headed by a mysterious figure known as the Keeper. Another central character, who gives the story its slant, is American Richard Lansing, who joins the Vatican as a young monsignore in 1945, and becomes the confidant of five successive popes. When he reaches the apex of his career, he staunchly opposes any Church bargain with Mammon. Martin (author of bestsellers The Final Conclave and Hostage to the Devil), was a professor in the Vatican's Pontifical Biblical Institute: he has an insider's knowledge of the intrigues and power plays that go on behind the papacy's smooth facade. His tale encompasses the fall of Mussolini, the penetration of the Vatican by a Soviet mole, the murder of a pope in the Soviet interest (with help from Vatican officials), and other major events real or imagined. Vatican is not unlike a bureaucracy itself: intricate, far from iconoclastic, and impeded in its forward progress by obsessive attention to detail. 60,000 first printing; $75,000 ad/promo; author tour. Those who read Martin's The Final Conclave ( LJ 3/15/78) will experience a strong sense of deja vu while reading his latest. The basic facts and premises in that work are here woven into a story around Richard Lansing, a young priest from Chicago, who arrives in Italy in 1945 for his ``Roman stint.'' The first 200 pages of the novel are a bit ponderous, but the pace picks up and the problems and factions in the Church are well portrayed. Vatican is scheduled to be a TV mini-series, so public... read more

Hardcover Crossroad/Herder & Herder
From Publishers Weekly
In 1968, Pope Paul VI issued an encyclical, Humanae Vitae, upholding the Catholic Church's ban on contraception. His stance went against the majority opinion of the Papal Birth Control Commission, an unprecedented gathering of bishops, cardinals, gynecologists, physicians, psychiatrists, demographers, sociologists, economists and married couples, which met in Belgium and Rome between 1963 and 1966. In an expose unveiling intrigue and bitter controversy at the highest levels of the Catholic Church, Northwestern University journalism professor McClory charges that Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani, head of the commission's final session, met privately with Paul VI, presented him with the "Minority Report" condemning birth control and personally swayed the pope to reverse his initial predisposition, which was toward approval of contraception within marriage. Pat and Patty Crowley, a married couple from Chicago, former leaders of the Christian Family Movement, served on the commission, voicing CFM members' desire for a change in Vatican policy. McClory skillfully interweaves the Crowleys' personal story with that of Humanae Vitae, tracing the couple's frustration and disillusionment with the Church's unbending position. Included is the full text of the commission's "Majority Report," never officially released by the Vatican. Photos.

Journalism professor McClory retells the dramatic story of the Vatican's Pontifical Commission on Population, Family, and Birth. This commission met from 1964 to 1966 under papal auspices to determine whether Roman Catholic teaching on contraception might be modified in view of developments in medicine, social sciences, and moral theology. The 1965 fourth meeting saw membership expanded to include more laymen and a few women. The majority final report recommended changes in traditional church... read more

Since its release, More Than a Carpenter has been challenging readers to ask the question, "Who is Jesus?" Author and renowned speaker Josh McDowell acknowledges that while the topic of God is widely accepted, the name of Jesus often causes irritation. "Why don't the names of Buddha, Mohammed, Confucius offend people? The reason is that these others didn't claim to be God, but Jesus did." By addressing questions about scientific and historical evidence, the validity of the Bible, and proofs of the resurrection, McDowell helps the reader come to an informed and intelligent decision about whether Jesus was a liar, a lunatic, or the Lord. This short, 128-page gem does not employ fancy theological words, forsaking the layman, but reads more like an intimate research document laying out the facts with veracious accuracy, from reliable sources ranging from secular scientists to conservative seminarians. A skeptic himself for many years, McDowell always believed that Christians were "out of their minds" but now insists that "never has an individual been called upon to commit intellectual suicide in trusting Christ as Savior and Lord." McDowell adeptly articulates fundamental answers to poignant questions that cause the skeptic to consider whether Jesus was a liar causing countless martyrs to die in his wake, a lunatic deserving death, or actually the Lord of the universe. --Jill Heatherly
Book Description
Josh McDowell's timeless examination of the true nature of Christ and his impact on our lives is one of the best-selling Christian books ever (more than eight million copies in print worldwide!). Written by a former skeptic of Christianity, it is a hard-hitting book for those who doubt Jesus' deity and his purpose.

About the Author
Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk in the Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani near Bardstown, Kentucky. Book Description
"The whole problem of our time is the problem of love. How are we going to recover the ability to love ourselves and to love one another?"
"We cannot be at peace with others because we are not at peace with ourselves, and we cannot be at peace with ourselves because we are not at peace with God."
"There is a distinction between a contrite sense of sin and a feeling of guilt. The former is a true and healthy thing, the latter tends to be false and pathological."
"The man who suffers from a sense of guilt does not want to feel guilty, but at the same time he does not want to be innocent. He wants to do what he thinks he must not do, without the pain of worrying about the consequences."
"The history of our time has been made by dictators whose characters, often transparently easy to read, have been full of repressed guilt. They have managed to enlist the support of masses of men moved by the same repressed drives as themselves."
"Modern dictatorships display everywhere a deliberate and calculated hatred for human nature as such. The technique of degradation used in concentration camps and in staged trials are all too familiar in our time. They have one purpose: to defile the human person."

Book Description
The New Man shows Thomas Merton at the height of his powers and has as its theme the question of spiritual identity. What must we do to recover possession of our true selves? By way of an answer, Merton discusses how we have become strangers to ourselves by our dependence on outward identity and success, while our real need is for a concern with the image of God in ourselves. At a time of retrieval of our religious traditions, Merton's voice is both intelligent and spiritually compelling.
Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, is perhaps the foremost spiritual thinker of the twentieth century. His diaries, social commentary, and spiritual writings continue to be widely read after his untimely death in 1968.

"It can become almost a magic word," Thomas Merton says of contemplation; "or if not magic, then inspirational, which is almost as bad." With these words, Merton takes us through the reality of contemplation, which is, the author says, "life itself, fully awake, fully active, fully aware that it is alive. It is spiritual wonder." Above all, contemplation is "awareness of the reality" of the Source, "with a certitude that goes beyond reason and beyond simple faith." As these definitions should suggest, in this 20th-century classic on the contemplative life, as in the best of Merton's work, this Trappist monk wonderfully combines a disciplined and deeply learned intellect with the lyrical passion of the poet. It is this rare combination that makes this book not only informative but also moving. Covering a diverse range of subjects ("Faith," "The Night of the Senses," "Renunciation"), it moves the reader through certain traditional "phases" of contemplation, and gives an idea of what to expect in this spiritual process (including despair and darkness). The book describes, but it also enacts. In its own prose it invites the reader to "cast our awful solemnity to the winds and join in the general dance." --Doug Thorpe

A much-enlarged and revised version of Seeds of Contemplation--one of the late Father Merton's most widely-read and best-loved works--New Seeds of Contemplation seeks to awaken the dormant inner depths of the spirit so long neglected by Western man and to nurture a deeply contemplative and mystical dimension in our spiritual lives.
Book Description
One of Father Thomas Merton's most widely read, translated and beloved books is once again available in audio form. This invaluable reflection on meditation awakens the heart through a spiritual journey inside what makes us human. It guides the listener through a very personal soul searching toward the goal of contemplative spirituality and enlightment. No book in modern times so defines the modern meditative tradition. --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

It is impossible to exaggerate the influence of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius since its completion in 1535. In these exercises, as the editor writes, "St. Ignatius' personal insights into ascetical theology found their clearest expression; in them, too, each new generation of Jesuits is formed according to the spirit of St. Ignatius." A man of great practical genius, Ignatius created the book as the basis for retreats given to priests, lay people, and monastics. Organized according to five major themes (Creation, Mankind, The Kingdom of God, Christ, and the Trinity), the exercises are divided into four "weeks" of meditations--although these weeks may last a few days or a few months. The overall goal is to lead the retreatant through a series of meditations on the life of Christ, beginning with reflections on the disorder and chaos of one's own life and progressing to a series of meditations on Christ's life, inviting the retreatant to a knowledge and love of Christ. The third week of exercises focuses on the crucifixion, and the fourth and final week develops meditations on the resurrection, leading ultimately to "the assimilation of the soul to God... so that one lives one's life exclusively for God in joyous service."
This is not so much a book to be read as a path to be entered. Still used around the world (and not just by Jesuits), it remains one of the clearest roads to a deeper spiritual life. --Doug Thorpe

Written in 1533, this masterpiece by St. Ignatius has long been recognized as a brilliant and inspired guide to the development of a deeper spirituality.

No woman alive today has inspired so many with her simplicity of faith and compassion so all-encompassing. As she daily embraces the "least of the least" in her arms, Mother Theresa challenges the whole world to greater acts of service and understanding in the name of love.
First published in 1971, this classic work introduced Mother Theresa to the Western World. As timely now as it was then, Something Beautiful for God interprets her life through the eyes of a modern-day skeptic who became literally transformed within her presence, describing her as "a light which could never be extinguised."

This handbook is a clearly written guide to the organization of local groups interested in nonviolent civil disobedience campaigns against such intervention. From Library Journal
Most touching is Nouwen's account of his near-fatal accident when hit by a car while walking over ice to help a handicapped boy. Nouwen goes through many emotions: real anger when gas station attendants refuse to drive him to the boy, a realization that the accident has given him a new pespective on his life, peace in the face of death but also the realization that "it was not love that kept me clinging to life but unresolved anger." When he does survive, he asks, "Why was I asked to return to a place where love is so ambiguous?" Brief but profound are his responses to the experience as he realizes God's call to deeper trust in God and to radical freedom. Nouwen's personal narrative is an important book for many people pondering the mystery of life and death, regardless of their religious commitments.

The Genesee Diary: Report from a Trappist Monastery is Henri Nouwen's journal of his seven-month stay in the Abbey of the Genesee in upstate New York. His reflections on daily life with the Trappists are funny, wise, and often profound--resembling Kathleen Norris's The Cloister Walk, but a bit less thematically structured and more down to earth. Nouwen's goal is simply to record what it's like to pass the time in a cloistered community. He spends part of his stay there reading Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which helps awaken a hunger for a richer experience of life that he subsequently satisfies by learning to slow down. In his first week at the monastery, Nouwen writes, "I have so many ideas I want to write about, so many books I want to read, so many skills I want to learn--motorcycle maintenance is now one of them--and so many things I want to say to others now or later, that I do not SEE that God is all around me and that I am always trying to see what is ahead, overlooking him who is so close." Then, looking forward to being planted in one place among the Trappists, he writes, "Maybe I need to get stuck," to learn to see God. He does, and he does. --Michael Joseph Gross --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Publisher
The Wounded Healer is a hope-filled and profoundly simple book that speaks directly to those men and women who want to be of service in their church or community, but have found the traditional ways often threatening and ineffective. In this book, Henri Nouwen combines creative case studies of ministry with stories from diverse cultures and religious traditions in preparing a new model for ministry. Weaving keen cultural analysis with his psychological and religious insights, Nouwen has come up with a balanced and creative theology of service that begins with the realization of fundamental woundedness in human nature. Emphasizing that which is in humanity common to both minister and believer, this woundedness can serve as a source of strength and healing when counseling others. Nouwen proceeds to develop his approach to ministry with an analysis of sufferings -- a suffering world, a suffering generation, a suffering person, and a suffering minister. It is his contention that ministers are called to recognize the sufferings of their time in their own hearts and make that recognition the starting point of their service. For Nouwen, ministers must be willing to go beyond their professional role and leave themselves open as fellow human beings with the same wounds and suffering -- in the image of Christ. In other words, we heal from our own wounds. Filled with examples from everyday experience, The Wounded Healer is a thoughtful and insightful guide that will be welcomed by anyone engaged in the service of others.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of psychiatrist Peck's bestselling The Road Less Traveled will enjoy this self-help sequel, a collection of edited lectures that offers a tough-minded, liberating guide to learning to live and die with dignity, creativity and meaning. Peck maps four distinct steps of spiritual growth. The first stage is exemplified by antisocial persons; in the second are those who depend on religious or other institutions for meaning in their lives; next are religiously skeptical truth-seekers; the fourth stage embraces "mystical/communal" people attuned to the interconnectedness of all things. At times sounding himself like a mystic, he urges readers to discover the meaning of their lives by confronting the mystery and inevitability of death; envisages God as a sexual being who endowed human lovemaking with a spiritual component; outlines his vision of heaven and hell; and fuses psychiatric insights with his highly personal approach to Christianity. He also critiques the New Age movement, explores myths as guiding metaphors for psycho-spiritual growth and plumbs the roots of addiction, guilt, blame, self-hate and self-acceptance. By melding love, science, and religion into a primer on personal growth, M. Scott Peck launched his highly successful writing and lecturing career with this book. Even to this day, Peck remains at the forefront of spiritual psychology as a result of The Road Less Traveled. In the era of I'm OK, You're OK, Peck was courageous enough to suggest that "life is difficult" and personal growth is a "complex, arduous and lifelong task." His willingness to expose his own life stories as well as to share the intimate stories of his anonymous therapy clients creates a compelling and heartfelt narrative. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
Book Description
Perhaps no book in this generation has had a more profound impact on our intellectual and spiritual lives than The Road Less Traveled. With sales of more than 7 million copies in the United States and Canada, and translation into more than 23 languages, it has made publishing history, with more than 10 years on The New York Times bestseller list.
Now, with a new introduction by the author, written especially for this 25th anniversary deluxe hardcover edition of the all-time national bestseller in its field, M. Scott Peck explains the ideas that shaped this book and that continue to influence an ever-growing audience of readers.
Written in a voice that is timeless in its message of understanding, The Road Less Traveled continues to enable us to explore the nature of loving relationships and leads us toward a new serenity and fullness of life. It helps us determine how to distinguish dependency from love; how to become a more sensitive parent; and ultimately how to become one's own true self.
Recognizing that -- in the famous opening line of his book -- "Life is difficult" and that the journey to spiritual growth is a long one, Dr. Peck never bullies his readers, but rather gently guides them through the hard and often painful process of change toward a higher level of self-understanding.
Combining profound psychological insight and deep spirituality, this one-of-a-kind hardcover anniversary edition is a book to treasure and turn to again and again for inspiration and understanding. As Phyllis Theroux wrote in The Washington Post when the original edition of The Road Less Traveled was first published, "It is not just a book but a spontaneous act of generosity." --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Booklist
A wake-up call for religious leaders, this book confronts clergy and laity alike with the perplexing questions surrounding new reproductive technologies, such as surrogate motherhood, genetic engineering, and selective abortion. These technologies can end the heartbreak of infertility, but they can also scramble family relationships, while turning children, surrogate mothers, and sperm-donor fathers into market commodities. Because of such moral risks, some religious leaders have anathematized these new ways to make babies. But Peters hails the new technologies as aids in creating a society freed from the constraints of mere biology, a society committed to fostering the dignity and well-being of each child. It is against the visionary ideals of this new society that the author measures all theological doctrines--classical and contemporary, Catholic and Protestant--governing sexuality, child-bearing, and marriage. This latest volume in the Studies on the Family, Religion, and Culture series will spark widespread interest and heated debate. Bryce Christensen

John Pollock, who is the official biographer of Billy Graham, here presents a life of Jesus as seen by the Apostle John. Pollock remains faithful to the Gospels, and his work will especially appeal to evangelicals. Englishman Davidson gives a spirited reading that uses his distinctive voice well. Rather than attempting to give each character a distinct voice, Davidson adroitly changes his narrative voice to portray mood or character. Sometimes the voice he uses to express excitement may sound slightly amusing to American ears. On the whole, however, his voice has a peculiar gait that makes this work a pleasure to listen to and an energy that sustains the excitement, and wonder, of this tale. M.T.F. Book Description
One of the classics of modern spirituality, Encounters with Silence is one of Karl Rahner's most lucid and powerful books. A book of meditations about man's relation with God, it is not a work of dry theology, but rather a book of prayerful reflections on love, knowledge, and faith, obedience, everyday routines, life with our friends and neighbors, our work and vocation, and human goodness. The immense success of this moving work is a tribute to its practicality and the ability of the great theologian to speak simply and yet profoundly to ordinary men and women seeking an inspiring guide to the inner life, one that never forsakes the world of reality. The book is cast in the form of a dialogue with God that moves from humble but concerned inquiry to joyful contemplation.

From Library Journal
Procreative freedom is "the freedom to decide whether or not to have offspring and to control the use of one's reproductive capacity." Robertson, a legal bioethicist who teaches at the University of Texas at Austin's law school, argues that the principle of procreative liberty should be used to determine the ethics and legalities of the many controversial issues surrounding reproductive technology. While obviously favoring his procreative liberty approach, the author allows some discussion of conflicting viewpoints. Robertson's position may not be universally accepted, but his works are regularly cited and his perspective is given significant coverage in many books on this topic. In addition to the much-discussed issues of abortion and surrogacy, Robertson also discusses new issues such as fetal tissue transplants and prenatal genetic screening. While the basic technological facts in this book may become dated, the legal philosophy presented may serve as a foundation for future considerations. Highly recommended for academic and special libraries.

Book Description
Cloning, genetic screening, embryo freezing, in vitro fertilization, Norplant, RU486--these are the technologies revolutionizing our reproductive landscape. Through the lens of procreative liberty--meaning both the freedom to decide whether or not to have children as well as the freedom to control one's reproductive capacity--John Robertson, a leading legal bioethicist, analyzes the ethical, legal, and social controversies surrounding each major technology and opens up a multitude of fascinating questions: Do frozen embryos have the right to be born? Should parents be allowed to select offspring traits? May a government force welfare recipients to take contraceptives? Robertson's arguments examine the broad range of consequences of each reproductive technology and offers a timely, multifaceted analysis of the competing interests at stake for patients, couples, doctors, policymakers, lawyers, and ethicists.

Presents a Jungian understanding of Christ's teaching in this revised edition of a spiritual classic.
Book Description
By showing how Jesus' teachings relate to our inner depths, this book guides us toward a more conscious and creative life. The Kingdom Within explores the significance of Jesus' teachings for our interior life -- that inner reality that Jesus called "the kingdom of God." It is Sanford's conviction that contemporary Christianity has overlooked this inner dimension of Jesus' teachings and so has lost touch with the human soul.Illustrated with case histories and dream material drawn from the author's work as a psychotherapist, The Kingdom Within examines such characteristics as extroversion and introversion, masculinity and femininity, thinking and feeling, and sensation and intuition to show how Jesus met the criteria of wholeness or fullness of personhood. Step by step, Sanford helps us to shed the outer mask, to eschew sin, which "means living in enslavement to what we don't know about ourselves," and to follow the road of consciousness, which leads to "a great treasure waiting only to be discovered."

The Catch 30s -- illusions shaken, it's time to make, break, or deepen life commitments. The Forlorn 40s -- Dangerous years when the dreams of youth demand reassessment, men and women switch characteristics, sexual panic is common, but the greatest opportunity for self-discovery awaits. For over 20 years, kids and kids at heart have giggled at the jumbled, goofy nonsense poems of Shel Silverstein. And now, lucky readers can listen to his mad meanderings as well with this 20th anniversary edition of A Light in the Attic, which includes a CD read by the author himself. Eleven classics, including "Twistable, Turnable Man," "The Dragon of Grindly Grun," "Prehistoric," and "Backward Bill" are performed by the late virtuoso of verse, while the tremendously popular book contains every one of the original poems that made Silverstein's name a household word: "Poemsicle," "Hula Eel," "Standing Is Stupid," "Moon-Catchin' Net," "Meehoo with an Exactlywatt," and dozens upon dozens more. Silverstein's amusing, cartoonish line drawings are every bit as familiar and beloved to readers as his poems. Gone, but not forgotten, the creator of the irresistible poetry collections Where the Sidewalk Ends and Falling Up, left an indelible mark on children's poetry.
